The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold,
shaped by human hands.
They have mouths but cannot speak,
and eyes but cannot see.
They have ears but cannot hear,
and noses but cannot smell.
And those who make idols are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.

For the hearts of these people are hardened,
and their ears cannot hear,
and they have closed their eyes—
so their eyes cannot see,
and their ears cannot hear,
and their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me
and let me heal them.
Blind irony.
The things we look at most are what keep us from actually seeing.
Since the dawn of time, people have created. We were made in GOD’s image. GOD is Creator. Thus, we create. It’s a beautiful thing until…
The problem arises when our own creations replace the Original Creator. While we may avoid bowing down to statues and golden calves, we've created such technological wonders as television, the internet, video games, iPhones, and the like. No, there is nothing inherently wrong with them unless they become idols. And we spend massive amounts of time allowing these things to consume our vision, our minds, our lives. And if it's not these things, there are others. Countless others. Vying for our time. Interrupting our prayers. Dumbing us down in a spiritual sense.
They must be removed as idols if we are to see GOD and the full extent of his glory, which is genuine joy. Furthermore, if you've been following these LifeTogether devotions, you already know what is coming: Only GOD can remove the scales from our eyes. Only he can help us truly see. Only he can give us the strength to smash (or simply turn off) these “things, toys, and technology” to discover him as the Source of Joy.
May all the things, toys, and technology in your life glorify- not deprive you of- the Creator today.
